Dorothy King
Counsellor
Hello! I am a person-centred therapist. My role is to provide compassion and support; whatever has brought you here, it is easier to cope when you have someone to talk to.
Therapy can bring comfort when you are going through loss, transition, or turmoil. It can offer the chance to reflect on how you have been shaped by the events of your life or your relationships. Perhaps most importantly, it can give you a new perspective on your future, and help you to change and grow.
About Me
I have been studying and working in mental health for 10 years. In all that time, connecting with people has always been what brings me joy and purpose. My own experiences in therapy have helped me to understand myself, my queer identity, and my relationships more deeply. Through this process, I have learned to make more thoughtful decisions that attend to my own wellbeing.
The most important thing that helped me achieve this was the relationships I have had with my own therapists; nurturing, supportive, but also honest and at times challenging. I aim to provide these same conditions for my clients, and support them as they navigate life.
Experience
Qualifications
I have experience working in various roles in charity counselling services, in NHS and community mental health settings, and with asylum seekers and refugees. My other roles have always focussed on offering wholistic support, and building relationships with people, which I bring into my counselling practice.

My Approach
I am trained in the Person-Centred mode of counselling. The philosophy behind this approach is that the most important aspect of therapy is the therapeutic relationship. The three pillars of this relationship are empathy, honesty, and unconditional positive regard for the client. When these elements are present, the conditions are right for therapeutic growth.
My passion for therapy comes from seeing people empowered to make changes in their own lives. By offering a non-judgemental space, where my clients can feel accepted and free to explore their thoughts and feelings, I have had the privilege of watching them grow and heal.
